How to get your PC ready for 3D

As a Windows Insider, you have access to preview our 3D experiences! To get started, you'll need to be running a Windows 10 Creators Update preview build.

Let's get started

Step 1: Sign up to be an Insider

To become a Windows Insider, get started here.

Step 2: Make sure you have the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

You need Windows 10 Anniversary update before receiving builds for Windows 10 Creators Update. If you’re not sure – you can download the Update Assistant.

Step 3: Update your PC

On your PC, go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program.

From there, select Get started and follow the on-screen prompts.

Step 4: Choose your Insider level

Once you join the Windows Insider Program on your PC, your machine is automatically put into the Release Preview ring. To get the Paint 3D Preview, you will need to select either the Fast or Slow ring.

  • Slow ring: (Most people!) If you are not a PC expert, but want to check out new features like the Paint 3D Preview, select the slow ring.
  • Fast ring: (PC experts!) If you like to be on the cutting edge, this is the right ring for you. The Fast ring is for the more advanced people who are comfortable dealing with software bugs.

Step 5: Compatibility check

After selecting either the Fast or Slow ring, a “Compatibility Check” will run in the background that registers your PC with our build release system.

Step 6: Install Creators Update

Once you do the compatibility check, your PC will be targeted to receive Windows Insider Creators Update builds. This may take up to 24 hours to complete (although it’s usually faster!).

You're ready... Get Paint 3D Preview!

Once your PC has updated, you will be available to download Paint 3D Preview from the Store. Search for "Paint 3D Preview" in the Store, or launch the Store right from here.

Heads up: To make sure you've got a compatible build (Build 14901 or higher), check the watermark at the lower right-hand corner of your desktop.

* You'll need a Microsoft Account set to US, UK, Canada English, Australia or New Zealand in order to explore 3D in Windows.
